How to...
Guidance on making your meadow the best it can be

3. Sowing

Recap - Planning and Preparation
By reaching this section you would have already planned out your meadow, prepared the ground and have your seed blend ready. If you prepared the ground some time ago then walk the area one more time to make sure it doesnt need a little attention here and there. Its not a bad idea to quickly re-rake the area and pick out any stones that you may have missed. Ideally the soil should be slightly moist (not wet) and have a light crumbly texture on the surface.

Pick the right day
Sowing is best done on a still dry day. You will be sowing by hand and a breeze or gust can easily catch the light seeds in the air causing uneven distribution. We have found that early morning tends to be the time when the air is stillest.

Divide your blend
If you are sowing a fairly sizeable area we recommend that you divide your seed blend down into equal more manageable lots. You may wish to mix in some form of bulk carrier, such as builders sand, to pack out your mix which will make sowing easier and more accurate. (Sand is easier to see on the ground compared to tiny seeds). If you use a carrier we suggest a ratio of 4 parts carrier to 1 part of blend. Mix well, and continue to mix as you sow. Use a container without any corners to sow from (a bowl is perfect).

Sow in two Halves
Aim to sow whole area fully with just half of your blend, then go back over again in the reverse direction with the other half. There are two reasons for this,  - If you run out of blend before you reach the end of your area then you can compensate for that with the second sowing. The other reason is that no matter how well you continue to mix the blend with your hand as you sow, the seeds will naturally seperate by size so your second sowing in the reverse direction will go some way to balance out seed distribution.

Work the seed in
The seed now needs to be compressed into contact with the soil. We dont need to bury it, we just need to ensure that there is good contact. This can be achieved by using a roller (if you are lucky enough to have one) or by walking over the area. Ensure that the whole area has been attended to..

Watering
If your ground is already moist there wont be any need to water straight away. If the ground is on the dry side then a light watering using a very fine spray should be applied. Keep an eye on the weather.  If the ground appears to dry out for a period of a day or two after sowing then repeat the light watering, but be careful not to over water.
Depending on the time of year and the climate, signs of germination should appear between 7-21 days.
